THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 1
MP3: GO STRAIGHT ON FOREST STREET. NEAR THE END OF THE STREET, YOU WILL SEE
BUILDING NUMBER 7, THE LIBRARY, ON YOUR RIGHT, AND BUILDING NUMBER 6, THE
POLICE STATION ON YOUR LEFT. TURN RIGHT AT THE CORNER. THIS IS STATE STREET.
Tom: We are almost there!
MP3: OPPOSITE THE LIBRARY YOU WILL SEE BUILDING NUMBER 9, THE NEW
COMMUNITY CENTER.
Kate: OK. here’s the new community center.
Tom: Look, this bike rack is empty. Let’s lock our bikes here!
4. Let’s Match! (page 13)
Say:
Write the sentences in your notebooks.
You are to match the sentences on the left to the sentences on the right.
Have the students answer in their notebooks.
When they have finished, go over the answers with them.
Answer Key:
1–e
2–c 3–g 4–a 5–f 6–d 7–b
5. Let’s Write! (pair work) (page 13)
In pairs, have the students suggest two different ways to get to Sam’s supermarket.
They are to write the directions in their notebooks.
Curriculum:
SI: Students will interact for purposes
such as giving directions.
6. Let’s Play! (page 13)
Group Work
Have the students play in small groups of four.
Each student takes a turn telling the others where he/she is by saying something like: “I’m next to
the hospital. Where am I?”/ “I’m on the corner of River Street and State Street. Where am I?”
The other students in the group write down where they think he/she is.
The one who asked says where he/she was.
Everyone has to show their answer to the group. The ones with the correct answer get a point. The
student with the most points in the group wins.
Another option for a more active activity
Set up a route in the classroom, with markers for different places. For example, you can place a red
notebook on a student’s desk and that would represent a red building, a water bottle could
represent a pool, etc.
Divide the class into two groups.
The goal is for the student to get from his/her desk to a predetermined place, using directions that
are given by others in the group. The students would be using, “Go straight. Now turn left. Go
straight. Stop!”
If the student makes a mistake, either in the instruction given or in the comprehension of the
instruction, he/she is disqualified.
Students who manage to get to the place easily win a point for their group.
