THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 1
Appreciation of Language: The word "cinema" is commonly used in Canada and Britain, but in
many parts of the USA, the cinema may be referred to as "the movie theater". So while in Britain
you would say "I'm going to the cinema" and it's clear that you are going to see a movie, in the USA
you would say "I'm going to the movies" and it has the same meaning.
Discuss spelling differences, for example, color (US) / colour (British), favorite (US) / favourite (British)
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them. Have the
students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas, go to pages vi and vii in the Yellow Pages section.
2. Complete! (page 12)
Have the students answer in their notebooks.
When they have finished, go over the answers with them.
Answer Key:
2. at the hospital
3. at the cinema
4. at the post office
5. at Sam's supermarket

Extra Activity:
Simpler: Have the students say where they are by stating the first letter of the place; I'm
somewhere that begins with 'h'. Where am I? They have their partners or the whole class guess.
More challenging: Have the students make up new descriptions, read them aloud, and get their
classmates to guess.
NEW WORDS
bike rack
corner
directions
left
right
straight
traffic light
turn
Vocabulary
Present the new words on the board. Either use the flashcards or write the
words. Play a matching game with the students, where you act out or show
through gestures the meaning of the word and the students have to write
down the correct word, using the words on the board.
