After Reading
When you have gone over the entire text, make sure everyone has understood what is happening
in the text.
Ask:
Who are the three characters in the text? (Kate, Tom, Prof. Sparky)
What do we know about them? (Prof. Sparky invents new inventions, Tom and Kate are two
kids.)
3. Let's Think! (page 6)
Say and ask:
Tom and Kate got a secret code.
Why do you think people use secret codes? (Accept all logical answers.)
Do you know any secret codes? (If anyone does, encourage them to share or teach the
class.)
4. Break the Code (page 6)
The Secret Code
Have the students look at the code key on the inside front cover of their book.. Review all the
pictures to make sure everyone knows which picture represents which letter.
As practice,
have the students say their names in code:
For example:
Teacher to Miri: What’s your code name?
Miri: My name is moon – igloo – rat – igloo
Yael: My name is yoyo – apple – elephant – lion
In pairs, have each student say a word, in code, to their partner, and the partner has to guess what
it is.
Now have the students figure out what the secret message in
exercise 4 is and then report.
To do this exercise, they should go to their Workbook page 223.
