THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
Paragraph 3
Ask:
Why do all the kids raise their hands? (they all came for the same reason)
What does Amy say about telling an adult? (Always tell the adult)
Why does Amy say we have to tell an adult? (we want to feel safe / we want to be proud of
who we are/ we want to belong)
Paragraphs 4 and 5
Ask:
What does Amy say about picture 6? (it’s bullying)
Why does Ann raise her hand? (because this is exactly what happened to her at lunch)
Why does Kate turn red? (she’s embarrassed that she was so mean to Ann)
What does Kate say to Ann? (she’s sorry)
Paragraph 6
Ask:
What does Amy say about picture 10? (it’s bullying)
HOTS What does this remind us of regarding Ann? (she was laughed at on her Facepage
page)
Why does the boy in the back say it’s funny? (it’s not about him / he’s a bully)
Why do all the kids laugh when Amy says the bit about putting flowers in his hair?
(encourage the students to realize that the kids thought it was a good way to get back at
him)
Why does the boy in the back get upset? (he doesn’t like to be laughed at)
Appreciation of Language
NOTE: The expression ‘post a picture’ doesn’t mean to send a picture by mail but to upload it to
a page on the internet. This expression has to be pointed out that when all the words are
together, they create a new meaning. Explain that in English many times there are word
collocations or phrases that when together each individual word changes its meaning to mean
something else altogether.
Paragraph 7
Ask:
When Miss Santos says ‘you know who you are’, who do you think she is talking about?
(maybe the boy in the back and his friends/ the bullies)
Do you think anyone will answer Miss Santos when she asks ‘Does anyone here have
something they would like to tell us’? (accept logical reasoning)
After reading
Ask: (encourage the students to speak up and share)
Have you ever been to a meeting like this one?
Do you think you would speak up if you were there?
Do you think this meeting will help change the situation at the school?
