THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
9. Language Focus (page 184)
Say:
Today we are going to look at nouns.
There are two kinds of nouns in English.
We have nouns we can count, like messages, e-mails, pens, apples, chairs, etc. we call those
‘count nouns’.
When we talk about count nouns, we can say exactly how many there are. (write a few
examples on the board)
Even if there are millions, we know something is a count noun because we can say ‘there is
‘one’ of that item’.
There are also nouns we can’t count. We call those ‘non-count nouns’.
These are things like cheese, water, milk, money, , rice, sugar, sand, and others. (write a few
examples on the board)
Non-count nouns are nouns we can’t say there is one of it.
We cannot say ‘there is one milk’, but we can say ‘there is one glass of milk’ or ‘one carton
of milk’.
However, we are then counting the glasses or the cartons and not the milk.
When we talk about non-count nouns, we always refer to them in the singular form.
That means we say ‘The water IS hot’.
We also say ‘I want some hot chocolate’ or 'Can I have some milk?'
Because we can’t say there is ONE of it, we always refer to the non-counts with ‘SOME’: e.g.
Can I have SOME water, please?
When we want to talk about a non-count noun, we refer to it in the singular;
e.g. The water IS cold
Let’s look at the examples in the book and read them together.
Say and ask:
For regular nouns, we add 's' to form the plural of count nouns.
Let’s take a look. (go through the examples in the book)
o regular nouns simply get ‘s’
o nouns that end with x, ch, sh, ss, or o we add es. Otherwise it is hard to say the plural
form of the word. E.g‘ dresses’, watches, brushes, foxes.
o Nouns that end with y and have a consonant before the y, we drop the ‘y’ and add
‘ies’, e.g. ‘a party – parties’, candy - candies (write on board)
o Noun that ends with ‘f’ we drop the ‘f’ and add ‘ves’ like ‘shelf’ which becomes
‘shelves’, wolf-wolves.
