THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
Point to the words “It’s really serious”.
In which paragraph do the words appear? (Paragraph 1)
Who says that? (Kate)
What is serious? (the mean notes)
What does Nadia think is terrible? (that someone is doing this to Maya)
Have the students read the next paragraph.
Ask:
How does Maya feel? (confused, scared, embarrassed))
How do we know that? Read the words that show that. (“I don’t want anyone to know
about it, I am embarrassed”, Maya doesn’t want to eat the apple.)
Why doesn’t Maya want to eat the apple? (She’s upset, she can’t eat.)
Why does Hallie smile at Maya? (She got the apple and she wants to reassure Maya that her
friends are with her.)
Have the students read the third paragraph.
Ask:
Who comes up to the girls? (Ann)
Who is Ann? (a new girl in school)
Why do you think she wants to sit with the four girls? (Accept all logical answers. Possible
answer: She wants to be their friend.)
Do the girls agree to let her sit with them? (yes)
Are they happy with the idea? (No, they say usually only the four of them sit at this table.)
Have the students read the last line and ask:
What does Kate want to think about with Ann? (“what can we do to help?”)
What do you think they can do to help? (Accept all logical answers. Encourage students to
use the new vocabulary and try to ask questions that would lead to the next part of this
story.)
Part 2 (track 50) (page 172)
Have the students read the first paragraph in part 2.
Ask:
While the girls are talking, do they include Ann? (no)
Why do you think they don’t? (Accept all logical answers.)
Who does Nadia suggest they speak to? (Miss Santos)
Why is Maya shocked? (She’s afraid Miss Santos will believe the notes.)
How does Hallie try to calm Maya down? (She says Miss Santos knows Maya and that she
doesn’t cheat.)
What point does Nadia make about why it’s important to tell Miss Santos? (that Miss Santos
doesn’t know that someone is trying to hurt Maya)
Have the students read the second paragraph,
Ask:
How does Hallie explain that Maya won’t get in trouble? (they didn’t do anything wrong.)
