THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 5
2. Let’s Rap! (HOTS – Prediction) (track 45) (page 164)
Have the students read the rap.
Read it together until they are familiar with it.
Then, have two students read the rap while another
pair acts it out in mime.
Then the entire class says ‘Please don’t wait!’
Ask:
Why do you think Maya needs a friend?
Why do you think Maya is crying?
The rap says, “Please don’t wait.” Don’t
wait for what?
If you have been doing this type of activity for every
rap, then make sure each rap is performed by a
different group of students.

Before Reading
Say and ask:
Look at the picture on pages 162-163. This is a picture of something that’s happening in the
story.
Now let’s look at the new words from the story.
NEW WORDS:
cheat
copied
get…in trouble
hurt your feelings
mean
upset
VOCABULARY
Write the new words on the board. Present each word and use it in a
sentence. Then ask the students if they know what the word means.
Allow guessing and finally give the right explanation.
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
