THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 4
Listening script – Mystery Solutions - Track 4
Mayor:
Ladies and Gentlemen of Lakeview, let’s start the Town Hall meeting. I’m
Alan Jackson, the mayor of Lakeview. We’re here to vote on a new neighborhood
called “Lakeview Estates”. Lakeview Estates will have more than 300 new houses.
Behind me is a map of Lakeview. This is map Number 1. The RED LINES on the map
show you where Lakeview Estates is planned.
There are two people who want to talk to you about this new neighborhood. First,
here is Miss Michelle Morton. Her company wants to build Lakeview Estates.
Michelle?
Michelle:
Good evening. My name is Michelle Morton, and I am president of the M&M
Building Company. Lakeview is a growing city and it needs new
houses! In Map Number 2, you see 300 new houses we want to build in a
beautiful new neighborhood called "Lakeview Estates". Please vote "yes"
for Lakeview Estates!
Mayor:
Thank you, Michelle. Now I want to introduce you to Charles Kane. Charles
doesn’t think Lakeview needs a new neighborhood. Charles?
Charles:
Thank you, Mr. Mayor. Lakeview DOESN'T need new houses.
When we build something new, we cut down trees, making our air
and our water dirty, and killing our wildlife. The animals that live in and
around Lakeview Park will all die if we build this new neighborhood! Please say NO
to Lakeview Estates!
Mayor:
Thank you, Charles. Now, ladies and gentlemen, it is time to vote.
Kate:
Excuse me, Mr. Mayor, may I say something?
Mayor:
Kate:
Yes, little girl. Come up here where everyone can hear you.
Yes, sir. Just a moment.
(We hear a chair scraping and people murmuring as Kate stands up. The murmuring
turns to surprise as we hear lots of kids filing into the room and following her up onto
the stage)
My name is Kate, this is my brother Tom, and these are our
friends from the Green Team. Lots more of our friends from
Lakeview School are outside. We are all here tonight because we have a new plan for
Lakeview. We want to show it to you.
(chairs creaking, murmurs of amazement from audience, sounds of children under)
Tom:
We learned about the animals that live around Lakeview. We found out that these
animals are running away because work is starting on a new neighborhood. These
animals are important to our environment. We want to protect them.
