THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 4
What does Tom and Kate’s dad mean when he says: “there are two sides to every story?”
(That there is a reason why they need to build more homes. It's not because they want to be
mean. We don’t always have a good and a bad guy in a detective case.)
HOTS – Compare and Contrast. Explain the difference between a house, a home and an
apartment. (Have students explain based on what they’ve just learned – a house is a
building for one family, a home is the place where people live, an apartment is one home in
a large building with many other homes.)
What does Tom and Kate’s dad suggest? (Build more apartment buildings instead of building
more private homes.)
What do the kids plan to do? (go to the town meeting)
3. Let’s Do It! (page 147)
Make a Speech!
The students are going to give a short speech. Explain that to them and then explain how it will be
done.
Say and ask:
Sometimes, we strongly believe in something and we want to make sure everyone knows it.
Read the three sentences under the pictures.
Pick the one that you think you can talk about most easily.
Why do you think this sentence is true or false?
In your notebook, write three reasons explaining why you think so.
Then choose one of the three and say why you think that reason is best.
When you are ready, present your ideas to the class.
o You have to say, "Hello, my name is … I want to talk to you about…"
End your speech with "Thank you for listening. I hope you agree with me."
Use the checklist to make sure you’ve done everything you’re supposed to.
You may want to use this rubric to assess the students' work.
