THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE
XIII. BEGINNING THE YEAR
Getting to know THE DETECTIVES
You want to help the students familiarize themselves with the book. You are going to have them
search for a few things in the book, together with you and then you can discuss the pictures they
come across or answer any questions they may have.
Say and ask:
We are going to get to know our book, THE DETECTIVES, a little more before we start
studying with it.
To do this, I’m going to give you some instructions and you have to do what I ask.
Let’s start. Look at the cover of the book. Who do you see?
(a man, a woman, a girl, a boy and an older man) Does the picture give you any clues about
who they are, or what they are like?
The book is called THE DETECTIVES. What does this word, ‘detectives’ mean? (a detective is
a person who tries to solve crimes or mysteries) Who do you think the detectives are?
(accept any logical answers)
Now let’s open the book to page iv.
How many units does it have? (6)
What is the title of each unit?
Which story is divided into two parts? (The Bicycle Thief)
Look at page 1. Who do we meet? (Tom, Kate, Jack and Amy and Professor Sparky)
These are the main characters; they have American names. The setting is an American town.
The names of the characters, streets and places are also American.
Go to page 27. What kind of text do you see on the page? (a newspaper article)
Go to page 46. What kind of text do you see on the page? (a comic strip)
Look at page 73, the first page of Unit 3. What do you think this unit is about? (a mystery at
a museum)
What are we going to learn on page 83? (language – past simple)
What do we see on page 93? (a big magnifying glass – it’s the Detective’s Notebook icon.)
What is a detective’s notebook? Who do you think will keep a detective’s notebook? (the
students will!)
Go to page 120-121. What do you think happened here? (have the students predict)
