THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE
GETTING STARTED
Each group of players should divide the Question Cards into stacks of 1-point, 2-point and 3-point
cards and place each stack on its corresponding block on the Game Board. When each group of
players is ready to begin, tell the class: “It’s now (11:00). Our game will last for (30 minutes).
Today’s game ends at (11:30). At (11:30) I will say, “Game Over!” The player/group with the most
points wins!”
PLAYING THE GAME
Players start each game on the corresponding start block (in Unit 1 this block is labeled ‘S1’; in Unit 2
‘S2’, etc.). Each player rolls the die once to determine who goes first; the player with the highest
number starts the game.
Each turn, players roll the die in order to move around the board; they must try to land on as many
questions as possible before the time is up. Each time they land on a color square, they choose a
corresponding card: 1, 2, or 3. Most of these cards have questions about the unit: these can be
questions about characters, plot, clues, vocabulary or grammar. If the player answers the question
correctly, he or she keeps the card and receives the corresponding number of points (a 1 card = 1
point, a 2 card = 2 points, a 3 card = 3 points). If the player answers incorrectly, the card is returned
to the bottom of the pile. Not all the cards have questions; some simply advance players, make them
miss turns, or move them to specific landmarks on the board. No points are awarded for these cards,
and they too should be returned to the bottom of the pile after the player’s turn.
The winner of the game is the player or group that collects the most points for questions correctly
answered in the time allotted by the teacher (for example, 30 minutes).
This game should be played upon completion of each unit, Units 1 through 5.
THE DETECTIVES Game Board is a fold-out on the inside back cover of the Student’s Course Book.
The board is illustrated with an aerial view of Lakeview, Greenville, and Seaside, with the topical
features and landmarks that have been introduced throughout the different units.
