THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 4
1. Let’s Read! (track 40) (pages 134-135)
Before reading
NEW WORDS
bushes,
dangerous,
destroy,
disturb,
footprints,
nests, recycle,
reuse,
sea turtle
Vocabulary
Present the new words on the board. Give only the following definitions for each
word and have the students try to match the right word to each definition.
Say and ask:
Look at the picture; why did the Green Team kids go to Lakeview Park? (to
find out why the animals are disappearing. See page 126 frame 13).
In pairs, write five "Rules of Behavior in the Park" (e.g, don’t pick
flowers, don’t climb on the trees, keep the park clean, walk on the
pathways only, etc.) Have students use the Imperative Form (Unit 2).
Look at the man who is taking notes? Who is he? (The man is Mike. Remind the students
that they met Mike in Unit 3, page 73. Mike is an artist. Now he is here too, taking notes or
drawing….)
Now, present the new words on the board. Use the picture as much as you can. Write the
words. Present each word and use it in a sentence.
Ask: HOTS
How do you think all these words are connected to the picture?
What do you think the Green Team learned? (that something bad is happening)
Reading
Say:
Have the students read what Jordan says.
Compare the "Rules of Behavior in the Park" you wrote in your notebook to what Jordan
says.
Discuss with the class.
Ask:
Why does Jordan say to be quiet? (It’s the animals’ habitat.)
How does Jordan say they should find clues? (Use your eyes and ears, or Look and Listen.
Remind students of the 3 Ls on the poster and the connection between LOOK and LISTEN.)
What clues are they looking for? (why the animals that live there are disappearing)
Where does Jordan say they should write the clues they are looking for? (each in his/her
Detective’s Notebook)
Have the students look at the different clues and read them.
Say:
Each clue is from someone else’s notebook.
Let’s read each one and see what the kids wrote.
Discuss each clue/note.
Clue/Note 1: Jordan tells the other members of the Green Team to be quiet, open their eyes and
ears. Why do you think he tells them that? (Accept logical guesses)
Clue/Note 2: The footprints show that people were there last night. What do you think they were
doing there? (Accept logical guesses.)
Clue/Note 3: The people came in the dark. Why? Are they hiding something? (Have students
predict.)
