THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE
It’s important to assess as the year goes on, not only at the end of a process, but rather also during
the process. The students should know that the process is as equally important as the product, so
while they are working, walk around the classroom and ask the students questions about what they
are doing. Make notes of their responses to help you evaluate how well they know the material at
any given time and see if there is improvement with time.
Ask the students to identify something you’ve taught or to explain why they are writing something in
a certain way. It’s important to ask them to produce language as well as to identify it, so ask them
questions such as ‘What does this say?’ or ‘Please read this sentence for me.’ Keep track of their
abilities and make use of this as well in your final assessment of the students.
The Teacher's Guide also includes tests for every unit, to be used as you see fit, according to the
needs of your class. These tests cover all the material taught in the unit and are designed as a
structured tests.
XI. THE DETECTIVES BOARD GAME
The Detectives board game allows students to review each unit in a fun and informal way. It is played
on the colorful Fold-Out Game Board on the inside back cover of the Student's Book. This board
shows a detailed map of Lakeview and features all of the landmarks mentioned throughout the
book.
Question Cards and cut-and-fold Playing Pieces for each unit can be found in the back of the
Workbook. The game is designed for up to four players.
OBJECTIVES
The pedagogical objective of the game is to help students review the unit they have just completed
in class, as well as engage in a communicative activity with their classmates. They do this by correctly
answering questions about characters, plot, and clues, as well the as the grammar and vocabulary
studied. The winner of the game is the individual player (or group, if groups of students are
competing against each other) that collects the most points for questions answered within the
allotted time.
BEFORE YOU PLAY
Each group of players will need:
1 Game Board (folds out from the back cover of the Student’s Book);
1 set of Question Cards (in the back of the Workbook you will find one cardboard page with
question cards for each unit; cut and use the question cards for the corresponding unit);
1 Playing Piece for each player (cut and fold from the last cardboard page in the back of the
Workbook);
1 die
Keeping the pieces
There is one set of Playing Pieces and Question Cards for each of the first 5 units. We suggest that
students glue an envelope to the inside cover of their Detective’s Notebook, and keep their Playing
Pieces and Question Cards in it.
