Let’s Read! (Track 30) (pages 103-104)
Before reading
NEW WORDS:
Borrow
diary
success
take care
Present the new words on the board.
Either use flashcards or write the words.
Discuss each word, giving a synonym or
a definition via a sentence that explains
the meaning of the word.
Vocabulary reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they
just learned. Ask them to read the sentences where they
found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain
them.
Have the students copy the words into their notebooks and
write their definitions.
Curriculum:
AI: Students will understand the
general meaning, main ideas, and
sequence of events in the text and
use this knowledge as needed.
AI: Students will identify different
text types and use this knowledge as
needed.
AI: Students will locate relevant
information for a specific purpose.
AI: Students will use simple
information tools such as a glossary,
a simplified learner’s dictionary, and
a table of contents
For weaker students: have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas, go to pages vi and vii in the in the Yellow Pages section.
Ask and say:
What kind of text is this? (a comic strip and a diary entry with a photo)
Scan the comic strip and find the following words in the text.
drawing / solve / paintings / remember / excited / clue / cell phone
How are all of these words connected in the story? (Allow the students to guess.)
Reading

Frames 1-2-3
Now read the comic strip.
Where is Bettina and what is she doing? (sitting on the bench in the park)
How do they know this is Bettina? (They have Mike's picture of her.)
Why do the kids want to talk to her? (they want her help to solve the mystery)
Frames 4-5
Does Bettina know that the paintings were stolen? (yes)
Why does she come to the museum so often? (The paintings are special to her.)
Why are the paintings so special to her? (She sold them to Mr. Bates.)
HOTS question: Can the children learn something from that information? (Accept all logical
answers but try to lead to the fact that the seal on the note had the letter B on it and that
Bettina sold the painting to Mr. Bates.)
HOTS: Do you think she may be the thief? (B for Bettina? Accept all logical answers.)
How can Bettina remember what happened on the day she sold the paintings? It was so
many years ago. (She wrote it all in her diary.)
