Ask:
Who comes in? (Amy)
What do the children see all of a sudden? (a hole in the window)
What do they think the hole shows? (that the thief cut a hole in the window to open it)

Ask:
Who sees the note all of a sudden? (Amy)
Who do Kate and Tom think the note is from? (the thief)
What do they all decide to do? (to open the note)
Frame 6
Ask:
What’s on the note? (a wax seal)
When are wax seals used? (Accept all logical answers. For example certificates, secret
letters)
What’s on the wax seal? (a secret symbol)
What do Tom, Kate and Amy do? (break the seal)
Frame 7
Now have them read the note.
Ask:
What does the note say about the two paintings? (that they belong to the writer of the
note)
What does the thief mean by saying "I will take back other things, too"? (He/She is planning
to come back.)
So, what two clues are there in this note? (1.The paintings belong to the thief; 2.The thief
will come back.)
Why does he/she say “There is nothing that you can do”? (Have the students speculate and
guess.)
Frames 8-11
Ask:
Do Amy, Tom and Kate understand the note the same way we did? (yes)
What does Amy say about the thief? (They know he/ she is coming back.)
After Reading
Ask:
Do you think Tom, Kate and Amy are right?
Do you think the thief really means to come back?
Why? (Accept all logical answers.)
