THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 2
Reading
Have the students read the text, one section at a time.
Ask questions about each paragraph.
Ask:
Paragraph 1
Who is sitting around the table? (Jack, Amy, Tom, Kate and the green-faced
guy)
How is the green-faced guy different today? (His face is not green today.)
Does anybody recognize him? (yes)
Who recognizes him? (Tom and Kate)
How do we know? (Kate shows the green-faced guy a picture of him next to
the bike rack.)
Paragraph 2
Who is Robert? (a reporter)
What is he working on now? (He’s working on a story about the stolen bikes.)
What do Robert, Kate, Tom, Amy and Jack have in common? (they are all
trying to find the thief.)
What clues do they all have now? (All the bikes that were stolen were green;
the days that the bikes were stolen were the free days in the timetable.)
Paragraph 3
Scan the paragraph and find out if they have any suspects. (maybe)
What information does Jack give? (The thief is planning to give Al the stolen
bikes on Friday, at a quarter to two at the old swimming pool.)
Which picture does Kate show? (MoCa’s picture of the bus stop)
Is Robert a suspect? (Accept all logical answers before you read paragraph 4.)
Paragraph 4
What can be seen in the pictures from MoCa? (Robert, Bill the librarian and
one more guy talking on the phone who has a scar on his arm)
What idea do they all have at the same time? (that Bill has a brother)
Why do you think so? (At the game half-time they noticed that when Bill
came back he had a scar. Looking at MoCa’s picture, they understand that
they are two different people who look alike-twins!)
After Reading
Ask:
What do you think happened? (Accept all logical answers based on the
information they have.)
