their partner for exactly 1.5 minutes. (Time
them.)
Curriculum:
SI: Students will answer questions
about familiar topics.
Say:
Discuss the question with your partner.
Use your Detective’s Notebook for more clues.
Then each pair has to report what they think really happened.
Write down the ideas on the board.
There may be repetition, so simply mark those that more than one pair brings up.
This will provide an idea of what most of the class thinks.
5. Language Focus: Present Simple Questions and Short Answers
(page 64)
Curriculum:
AL: Students will compare different
language elements of English, such
as tense and gender, to their mother
tongue.
Explain:
In the Present Simple tense, we can’t just ask a
question like we do in Hebrew or Arabic. For example, in Hebrew or Arabic
you would simply add a question mark to the end of a sentence.
In English, we have to use a helping verb.
The helping verb is like a servant – it helps the verb not get tired by doing all
the hard word or carrying anything we add to it.
So when we ask questions, we use the verb ‘do’ or ‘does’.
Do you remember the helping verb ‘do’ and ‘does’?
The verb itself stays in the base form, which is like the name of the verb.
When we answer a question in the positive or negative, we can use the short
form.
Let’s look at the examples in your book.
Explain the different examples and discuss anything that comes up.
