Name Cards Activity
If there are any students whose names begin with the letter ‘R’, follow the instructions for
the Name Cards Activity in Lesson 8, on page 21.
Big ‘R’
• Draw a big ‘R’ on the board.
• Ask what shapes it has. (two straight lines and a part-circle)
• Ask what letter it looks like. (a Big ‘P’)
• Ask: What is different? (big ‘R’ has a ‘leg’ at the bottom)
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 45.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘R’ and ‘r’ Letter Cards.
• Chant: The letter is ‘R’. The sound is /r/. The word is ‘rub’.
• Now tell students to take out the ‘Pp’ and ‘Nn’ Letter Cards and put them on their
tables with the big and small letters in pairs, i.e. ‘Rr’, ‘Pp’ and ‘Nn’.
• Say: Point to the letter ‘P’.
• Chant together and do the appropriate action: The letter is ‘P’. The sound is /p/.
The word is ‘point’.
• Repeat for the letter ‘Nn’.
• Call out: big ‘R’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Call out: small ‘r’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Continue with all of the Letter Cards.
ABC Poster, Mural and Song
• Have a student point to the letters ‘Rr’ on the poster.
• Tell students to chant and do the appropriate action: The letter is ‘R’. The sound
is /r/. The word is ‘rub’.
• Hold up the mural piece for ‘Rr’.
• Ask students where they think the letters ‘Rr’ go. (after ‘Qq’)
• Hang up the mural piece.
• Sing the ABC Song (track 7). Do the actions for the letters they have learned.
Workbook (page 38)
Open the Student Workbook to page 38.
Activity 1
• Have students take out their plasticine. Have them roll small logs to cover the
‘H’s at the top of the page.
• Have students color the letters at the top of the page, following the direction of
the arrows.
Activity 2
• Draw a small ‘r’ on the Letter House poster.
• Ask where small ‘r’ lives. (in the middle of the house)
