Before the Lesson
•

Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘M’.
Prepare a large picture of a camel with two humps.
Lesson Procedure
Small ‘m’, Action and Chant
• Show students the picture of the two-hump camel.
• Ask them what animal it is. (a camel)
• Ask what sound they hear in the middle of the word ‘camel’. (m)
• Teach the song.

As you say ‘two humps’, trace over the two humps with your finger to show the
‘m’ shape.
Have students sing with you and trace the two humps in the air with their fingers.
Draw a small ‘m’ on the board. Chant (track 34): The letter is ‘M’. The sound is
/m/. The word is ‘camel’, the word is ‘monkey’.
Ask students what other animals have an ‘m’ in their name? (monkey, mouse)
Ask what shapes make an ‘m’. (three lines - a straight line and two hooks)
