Before the Lesson
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘N’.
Lesson Procedure
Small ‘n’, Action and Chant
• Draw an ‘n’ on the board.
• Ask: Is this the letter ‘h’? Say: No! (Shake your head.) Say: No, no, /n/ /n/ no. It
is not an ‘h’.
• Chant with the class (track 32): The letter is ‘N’. The sound is /n/. The word ‘no’.
• Ask what shapes make an ‘n’. (a straight line and a hook)
• Now ask what letter small ‘n’ looks like. (small ‘h’) Ask: How are they different?
(small ‘h’ has a tall straight line and small ‘n’ has a short straight line)
Name Cards Activity
• If there are students whose names begin with the letter ‘N’, follow the instructions
for Name Cards Activity in Lesson 8, on page 21.
• Ask: What shape does big ‘N’ have? (three lines)
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 45.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘N’ and ‘n’ Letter Cards.
• Say: The letter is ‘N’. The sound is /n/. The word is ‘o’.
• Now have students take out the ‘Hh’ Letter Cards.
• Tell them to put the Letter Cards on their tables with the big and small letters in
pairs i.e. ‘Nn’ and ‘Hh’.
• Point to the letter ‘H’, and chant together: The letter is ‘H’. The sound is /h/. The
word is ‘hop’. Have students do the appropriate actions.
• Call out: Big ‘H’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Call out: Small ‘h’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Repeat with letters ‘N’ and ‘n’.
ABC Poster, Mural and Song
• Have a student point to the letters ‘Nn’ on the poster.
• Chant together with the class and do the appropriate action: The letter is ‘N’. The
sound is /n/. The word is ‘no’.
• Hold up the mural piece for ‘Nn’.
• Ask students where they think the letters ‘Nn’ go. (after ‘Mm’, between ‘Mm and
‘Oo’ before ‘Oo’)
• Hang up the mural piece.
• Sing the ABC Song (track 7). Do the actions for the letters they have learned.
