Max the puppet
Plasticine/pipe cleaners
Before the Lesson
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘H’.
Lesson Procedure
Small 'h', Action and Chant
• Say: I can jump on two feet. Jump, jump, jump. As you say ‘jump, jump, jump’, jump
up and down three times.
• Say: I can hop on one foot. Hop, hop, hop. As you say ‘hop, hop, hop’, hop on one
foot three times.
• Ask students what sound ‘hop’ begins with. (/h/) Have students hop and say: /h/ /h/
hop.
• Draw an ‘h’ on the board. Chant (track 31): The letter is ‘H’. The sound is /h/. The word
is ‘hop’.
• Have students repeat after you.
• Ask them what shapes make an ‘h’. (one
straight line and one hook)
• Introduce Max the puppet and make him hop
on one leg.
• Say: Max can hop. Hold the puppet near the
board and make it hop.
• Draw an ‘h’ by drawing a leg down and a hook
in the shape of one hop.
