Ask: What shapes make a ‘j’ ? (a line with a hook at the bottom and a dot)
Say: Note the dot at the top. What other letter has a dot on top? (small ‘i’)
Jumping Jelly Candies
• Hold up the jar of jelly candies. Say: What is in the jar? (jelly candies)
• Note the English word ‘jar’.
• Shake the jar up and down. Say: The Jelly Candies Jump in a Jar.
• Let students jump up and down beside their desks, saying: Jelly Candies Jump in a
Jar.
• Ask what sound they hear at the beginning of the words ‘jumping’, ‘jelly’ and ‘jar’. (/j/)
• Draw a ‘j’ on the board. All chant: The letter is ‘J’. The sound is /j/. The word is ‘jump’.
Name Cards Activity
If there is a student whose names begin with the letter ‘J’ follow the instructions for the
Name Cards Activity in Lesson 8, on page 21.
• Ask: What letter is at the start of the name? (big ‘J’) Draw a big ‘J’ on the board.
• Ask: What shape does it have? (a straight line with a hook)
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 43.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘J’ and ‘j’ Letter Cards.
• Chant: The letter is ‘J’. The sound is /j/. The word is ‘jump’.
• Now have students take out the ‘Gg’ and ‘Ii’ Letter Cards and tell them to put the cards
on their tables with the big and small letters in pairs, i.e. ‘Gg’, ‘Jj’, ‘Ii’.
• Say: Point to the letters ‘Gg’.
• Chant together, Have students raise the correct card and do the appropriate actions:
The letter is ‘G’. The sound is /g/. The word is ‘gorilla’.
• Repeat for ‘Ii’ and ‘Jj’.
ABC Poster, Mural and Song
• Have a student point to the letter ‘Jj’ on the poster.
• Chant: The letter is ‘J’. The sound is /j/. The word is ‘jump’.
• Tell students to do the action.
• Hold up the mural piece for ‘Jj’.
• Ask where they think the ‘Jj’ letter goes. (after ‘Ii’ and before ‘Kk’).
• Hang up the mural piece.
• Sing the ABC Song (track 7). Do the actions for the letters they have learned.
