On ‘bounce it all around’ draw a new ‘b’ drawing a line down and then around
twice.
This action is important for students to help them distinguish between the letters
‘b’ and ‘d’.
b = bounce the ball (line then circle)
d = drum/stick (circle then line)
‘B' Chant (track 25)
• Ask students what sound the words ‘ball’ and ‘bounce’ begin with. (/b/)
• Draw a ‘b’ on the board.
• Chant (track 25): The letter is ‘B’. The sound is /b/. The word is ‘bounce’. The
word is ‘ball’. Have students repeat after you.
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 43.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘B’ and ‘b’ Letter Cards.
• Ask students what shapes make a ‘b’. (a line and a part-circle)
• Ask: What letters does small ‘b’ look like? (‘d’, ‘p’, ‘q’)
• Ask: How are these letters the same? (They all have a line and a part -circle.)
How are these letters different? (The part-circle is to the right of the line in ‘b’,
and to the left in ‘d’).
• ‘d’ Draw the circle and then the stick from ‘the top floor’.
• ‘q’ Draw the circle and then the stick ‘going down to the bottom floor’.
• ‘p’ Draw the line going ‘from the middle to the bottom floor’ and then add the
circle.
• ‘b’ Draw the line ‘from the top floor’ and then add the circle.
Which End is Up?
• Take the paper with the letter ‘b’ written on it. Hold it up and ask what letter it is.

‘ball’. Do the appropriate actions.
• Turn the paper over to show the letter ‘d’. Ask what letter it is. (d)
• All chant and do the appropriate actions: Drum (stick), drum (stick). The letter is
‘D’. The sound is /d/. The word is ‘drum (stick)’. Emphasize the word ‘drum’.
• Turn the paper upside down to show the letter ‘q’. Ask what letter it is. (q)
• All chant and do the appropriate actions: The letter is ‘Q’. The sound is /kw/. The
word is ‘quiet’.
• Turn the paper over to show the letter ‘p’.
• All chant and do the appropriate actions: The letter is ‘P’. The sound is /p/. The
word is ‘point’. Make sure to distinguish between the sounds of /b/ and /p/.
