Prepare a piece of paper on which you write a large ‘q’ in dark ink. The paper
should be thin enough for the writing to show through on the reverse side.
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘P’.
Lesson Procedure
Point Your Finger (track 22)
• Play the song and sing along with the whole class.
• Point your finger as you chant.

Point to the ceiling.
Point to the floor.
Point to the window.
Point to the door.
Have students repeat the song with you.
Ask students what sound they hear at the beginning of the word ‘point’. (/p/)
Small 'p', Action and Chant
• Ask students what foods they know that begin with the sound /p/. (pizza, popcorn, pita,
pasta)
• Draw a small ‘p’ on the board. Say: Point, point. The letter is ‘P’. Point, point. The
sound is /p/. Have students repeat after you.
• Chant the ‘P’ chant (track 23) together with the class: The letter is ‘P’. The sound is
/p/. The word is ‘point’.
• Ask students what shapes make a ‘p’. (a line and a part-circle)
• Ask: What letter does ‘p’ look like? (‘d’, ‘q’) What are the differences? (‘d’ has a partcircle and a line going up; ‘q’ has a part-circle and a line going down; ‘p’ has a line
going down and a part-circle)
Which End is Up?
• Take the paper with the letter ‘q’ written on it. Hold it up and ask what letter it is.
• Turn the paper over to show the letter ‘p’. Ask what letter it is.
• Turn the paper upside down to show the letter ‘d’. Ask what letter it is.
Name Cards Activity
If there are students in the class whose names begin with ‘P’, follow the instructions for
Name Cards Activity, in Lesson 8, on page 21.
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 45.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘P’ and ‘p’ Letter Cards.
