Have students say the words and do the actions with you.
Be sure students do the drum action with their left hands, facing themselves, and the
stick is with the right hand

Chant with the class: The letter is ‘D’. The sound is /d/. The word is ‘drum’.
Name Cards Activity
If there are any students in class whose names begin with ‘D’, follow the instructions for
the Name Cards Activity in Lesson 8, on page 21.
Mystery Letter
• Look at the Name Cards for names that begin with ‘D’.
• Ask students what sound the name begins with. (/d/)
• Tell them that the first letter does not look like a small ‘d’ and ask what letter they think
it is. (big ‘D’)
• Ask them how they know. (names begin with big letters)
Big ‘D’
• Draw a big ‘D’on the board. Ask students what shapes make a big ‘D’. (a line and a
part of a circle)
• Ask what we draw first, the line or the circle. (the line - we write from left to right)
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 41 and 43.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘D’and ‘d’ Letter Cards.
• Now tell them to take out their Letter Cards for ‘Aa’.
• Hold up the Letter Cards for ‘D’, ‘d’ and ‘A’, ‘a’.
• Have students chant each letter, the sound it makes and the word that begins with the
sound: The letter is __. The sound is /_/. The word is________.
• Have them do the appropriate actions for the sounds.
