Drum and stick
Plasticine/pipe cleaners
Before the Lesson

Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘D’.
Get a drum and a drum stick (or any kind of stick). If no drum is available, you
may turn a bin or can upside down.
Lesson Procedure
Letter, Action and Sound /d/
• Hold up a drum. Ask: What is this? (drum)
• Hit the drum three times with the stick. Say: /d/ /d/ drum.
• Have students repeat after you. Pretend to hit a drum.
• Ask what letter in your language makes the sound /d/?
• Draw a ‘d’ on the board. Say: The letter is ‘d’. The sound is /d/. The word is ‘drum’.
• Have students repeat after you.
• Ask: What shapes does ‘d’ make? (a part-circle and a line)
• Ask: What letter does ‘d’ look like? (a small ‘a’, with a taller line)
•
Say: This is the drum.
•
Stand with your back to the class and make a ‘C’ shape with your left thumb and
fingers.
Hold your right hand in a straight line and say: This is the stick.
Show the “drum” (i.e. left hand) Say: Drum. Touch the “stick” (i.e. right hand) to the
“drum” to make the letter ‘d’. Say: Stick
