Letter Cards - ‘Vv’, ‘Ww’, ‘Xx’
Two sticks, e.g. chop sticks, drum sticks or sticks from trees
Shoe lace cut out

Before the Lesson
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with the letter ‘X’. These Name
Cards can be attached to their desks after the lesson.
Lesson Procedure
Body Shapes and Action
• Draw an ‘X’ on the board and say: The letter is ‘X’. The sound is /ks/.
• Ask students what shapes make an ‘X’? (2 lines)
• Say and show: Use your index fingers to form an ‘X’.
• Chant: The letter is ‘X’. The sound is /ks/. The word is ‘taxi’, the word is 'box’, the word
is 'Max'. (Tell students that there are hardly any words that begin with the letter ‘X’,
therefore we choose to use the letter in the middle or end of the word, e.g. taxi, fox,
box, Max.)
• Hold up two pencils to make an ‘X’. Ask students to tap the pencils against each other
and chant:
The letter is ‘X’. The sound is /ks/. The word is ‘taxi’.
The letter is ‘X’. The sound is /ks/. The word is ‘box’.
The letter is ‘X’. The sound is /ks/. The word is ‘Max'.
• Stand with legs spread wide and arms up to make the letter ‘X’.
• Ask: What letter do I look like? (an X)
• As you say: The letter is X, do two jumping jacks.
• As you say: The sound is /ks/, do two more jumping jacks.
• As you say: The word is ‘taxi’, do two more jumping jacks.
• Have students stand and say the chant while doing jumping jacks.
