The Pencil Song (track 3)
• Show students how to hold a pencil correctly.
• Check that every student is holding their pencil properly.
• Ask students to raise their hand with the pencil.
• Check to see who is left-handed. Be sure that left-handed students are sitting next to
other left-handed students, or on the left side of the table.
• Teach the song. Follow the instructions on page 7.

Hand out the Workbooks to students by calling out their names. The names are
written on the cover of each student’s Workbook. Eventually students will be able to
read their names as sight words.
Let students look through the book for a moment to satisfy their curiosity.
Show them how to open the book from left to right.
Open the Workbook to page 4.
Activity 1
• Say: Point to the dog. Tell students to help the dog find his way home. (Use L1 wherever
necessary.)
• Ask: Where is the dog’s house? Have students trace the path with their finger.
• Have students pick up their pencils. Check students’ pencil grips.
• Together sing The Pencil Song (track 3).
• Now, tell students to trace over the lines, in pencil, from the dog to its house.
Activity 2
• Now, tell students to trace over the lines, in pencil, from little Red Riding Hood
to her house.
Activity 3
• Tell students to trace over the lines, in pencil, as the bird flies above the mountains.
Activity 4
• Tell students to trace over the lines, in pencil, from the car to the garage.
