A long jump rope, cooked spaghetti, a paper plate and a plastic fork for each student.
Plasticine/pipe cleaners
Before the Lesson

Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘S’.
Prepare a long jump rope.
Prepare cooked spaghetti and a paper plate for each student.
Lesson Procedure
Small 's', Action and Chant
• Have several students begin to walk from the back of the room towards the front.
• After they take a few steps, hold up your hand, and say: Stop. Stop. /s/ /s/ stop.
• After they stop, say: Go.
• Again, after they take a few steps, hold up your hand and say: Stop. Stop. /s/ /s/ stop.
• Repeat until they reach the front of the room.
• Ask students what sound they hear at the beginning of the word ‘stop’. (/s/)
• Draw an ‘s’ on the board.
• Chant with the class: The letter is ‘S’. The sound is /s/. The word is ‘stop’.
• Have students repeat with you, holding up their hands in a ‘stop’ position.
Game: Jumping Snakes
• Take one end of the jump rope, and give a student the other end.
• Hold the rope on the floor and swish it back and forth continuously to make the rope
look like a slithery snake.
• Ask what animal the rope looks like. (a snake)
• Continue: What does a snake say? (/s/ /s/ /s/ /s/ /s/)
• Now ask what letter the snake looks like. (‘S’)
