Open the Workbook to page 39.
Activity 1
• Have students take out their plasticine. Have them roll small logs to cover the ‘U’s at
the top of the page.
• Have students color the letters at the top of the page, following the direction of the
arrows.
Activity 2
• Draw a small ‘u’ on the Letter House poster.
• Ask where small ‘u’ lives. (in the middle of the house)
Note: Tell students to be careful not to close up the top of the small ‘u’ so that the letter
looks like a small ‘o’.
• Draw a big ‘U’ on the Letter House poster.
• Ask where big ‘U’ lives. (on the top floor and in the middle of the house)
• Have students write rows of ‘Uu’s. As students write each letter, they can say the
sound / ŭ /.
Activity 3
• Ask students to look at the pictures and say the words: umbrella, up, under, cup, bug,
tub.
• Ask where the / ŭ / sound is in each word. (In ‘umbrella’, ‘up’ and ‘under’ it is at the
beginning of the word. In ‘cup’, 'tub' and ‘bug’ it is in the middle of the word.)
• Have students fill in the missing letter ‘u’ in each word.
