New Foods

Introduce the words milk, banana, apples, oranges by putting up the
flashcards and repeating the words with the class.
- Explain the connection between milk and milkshake and between
an orange and the color orange to help pupils remember.
- Tell pupils to look at the foods and drinks on the board. Ask a pupil: What
do you want? S/He answers: I want ..... Take the card off the board and
give it to the pupil. Make sure the pupil says thank you when s/he receives
the card.
- Continue this activity with all flashcards.
- Now ask pupils: Who has the banana? The pupil with the flashcard raises
his/her hand and says: I have the banana. Say: Thank you and put the
banana flashcard in the bag.
- Continue this activity with all flashcards.
- After reviewing the vocabulary, put the flashcards back on the board one
at a time and ask pupils to find the beginning letter of each word on the
ABC strip.
- Do this for all words except those beginning or ending with ch (chips,
chocolate, chicken, cheese, sandwich).

- Put pictures of chips, chocolate, chicken, cheese, sandwich on the board.
- Point to each picture and say: chips, cheese, chocolate, chicken,
emphasizing the /ch/ sound at the beginning of each word.
- Repeat the words together with pupils.
- Say sandwich, emphasizing the final /ch/.
- Have the class repeat after you.
- Put the ch flashcard on the board, above the pictures.
- Explain to pupils that in English, some sounds are made by putting two
letters together.
- Ask pupils to think of other words where they can hear /ch/ in the word.
Elicit: children, kitchen.
- Put the wordcards under the pictures.
- Point to the /ch/ on the wordcards as you say the word.
- Ask pupils: what words that are in English sound the same in their language.
