Picture Dictionary
Letters and picture stickers are included in the Practice Pages Books. These are used
in constructing a functional Picture Dictionary consisting of each letter of the alphabet
and pictures of words that begin with the sound of that letter. Each spread of two pages
is designated to a letter in the alphabet, one spread for each letter beginning from the
letter A and ending with the letter Z. These pages are followed by two page spreads
that contain consonant and vowel combinations (for example, ch, sh, ea, ai, etc.)
The left side of each spread contains a box where the appropriate letter sticker is
pasted. Lines are provided for practice in writing the letter. Pupils can stick the picture
stickers relevant to this letter on the page and, at a later stage, write the words, phrases
and sentences under the stickers.
The right side of the spread is purposely left open so that pupils can draw pictures of
words beginning with the letter, cut out and paste words and pictures from magazines,
or use this page for any other activity that will benefit the pupils.
The picture Dictionary will remain with the pupils until the end of the program. The
pages are numbered for teacher’s convenience.
Each time a new letter is introduced, teachers are advised to use the following routine
by telling pupils:
1. Find the letter “Cc” sticker.
2. Paste the letter “Cc” sticker on the letter “C” page of your dictionary.
3. Copy the capital letter “C” and the small letter “c” 5-10 times each.
4. Find the sticker pictures that begin with the sound / k / at the back of the Practice
Pages Book.
5. Paste the sticker pictures below the letter “C” sticker or anywhere you choose on the
spread.
6. Use the right side of the Picture Dictionary for additional practice in writing letters
and words and encourage pupils to cut and paste letters, pictures and words from
newspapers and magazines relevant to those they are learning.
