• Introducing the sound /th/
- Review the /th/ sound. Tell pupils this sound doesn’t exist in Hebrew.
Remind pupils that sometimes 2 letters make one sound as in /sh/ and /ch/.
- Practice the /th/ sound orally. Demonstrate how the /th/ sound is made.
- Add ‘th’ to the picture dictionary.
• Tell pupils: Open the Practice Pages to page 145-147.
- Look at the picture and elicit anything in the picture that contains, begins or
ends with the /th/ sound: three, thirteen, father, mother, brother,
grandfather, grandmother, birthday
- Ex. 28 - Read the story aloud or play ‘ex. 28’ from: www.eadventure.co.il/
pp8 and complete the exercise according to instructions.
• Ruth’s Birthday PartyThis is Ruth. Today is Ruth’s birthday. Ruth is thirteen years old. Ruth and her
family are going to the Three Bears Park for her birthday party.
Seth is Ruth’s brother. He is bringing three balloons. Grandmother and
Grandfather are bringing the birthday cake. Mother and Father are bringing
the food.
Ruth sees three presents on the table. Ruth wants to open the presents.
Mother says: Ruth, please wait! We want to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to you.
Then you can open the presents.
The family is singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Ruth. Now Ruth can open her
presents. She is very happy.
Note: This exercise includes a number of parts moving from recognizing
vocabulary with the /th/ sound, to sentence comprehension and guided writing.
- On page 147 - Ex. 28 part 7: Number the pictures:
Look at the pictures again together with the class and ask questions such as:
1. How old is Ruth?
2. Where are Ruth and her family going?
3. What is Ruth’s brother bringing to the party?
4. What are Grandmother and Grandfather bringing to the party?
5. Who is bringing the food?
6. What does Ruth want to do when she sees the presents?
7. What does Ruth say to her family?
