• Introducing the sound /ch/
- Explain that in English, 2 letters sometimes make one sound. Practice the /ch/
sound orally.
- Say the words that begin with ‘ch’ together with pupils while emphasizing the
/ch/ sound.
- Add ‘ch’ to the picture dictionary.
- Note: At times, throughout this unit of study, pupils will be required to read
whole words that contain some letter sounds that they have been taught, and
some letter combinations that they have not yet been taught formally.
Please refer to the Rationale concerning the reading of whole “familiar” words
which contain some letter sounds that have not yet been taught formally.
• Tell pupils: Open the Practice Pages to page 2.
- Ex. 1 - Complete the exercise according to the instructions.

- Remind pupils that they have the letter Xx in their picture dictionary. Have
pupils go back and write a few words with the letter Xx.

- Play the game with the food flashcards.
- A pupil reaches into the bag and pulls out a flashcard.
- The class asks the pupil: What do you have?
- The pupil answers: I have a ______ .
- Pass out to pupils flashcards of previously learned letters.
- Pass out the ch flashcard.
- As a pupil takes a picture out of the bag and says its name, the pupil with
the flashcard for the beginning letter of that word holds the letter up and
says the letter.

- Play the song again and point to food flashcards. Pupils fill in the name of
the appropriate food item.
- Give out the food flashcards to individual pupils. Pupils stand and hold up
the appropriate food flashcard when it is mentioned in the song.
