Reading Readiness
- Write the at words, the en words, the ag words and the ad words on the
board (fat, mat, cat, rat, Ben, ten, hen, bag, lag, rag, nag, mad, sad).
- Practice reading the words.
- Practice sentences. Write: The hen is fat. The cat is sad. Ben is ten.
- Read together and then have individual pupils volunteer to read.
- Write ed on the board. Say /ed/. Pupils repeat /ed/.
- Write: red. Say /r/e/d/ - red. Pupils repeat /r/e/d/ - red.
- Follow the same procedure for bed.
- Write sentences: The hen is red. The cat is red. The bed is red.
- Read the sentences and have pupils repeat. Sound out words when
necessary. Point to the and is and practice the sight words.

Sight Word: is
- Put up the wordcard for is.
- Explain to pupils that there is no word for is in Hebrew but we use it in
English all the time.
- Give pupils examples. Remind them of previously learned sentences: She
is a girl. He is a boy. It is red. It is big.
- Explain to pupils that even though the letter is S the sound is /z/. Have
pupils repeat several times.
- Write on the board: The hen is sad. Read the sentence together with the
class, first sounding out each word and then putting the words together.
- Do the same with: The man is mad. The hen is ten. Ben is fat.

Read the sentences aloud and have pupils repeat. Point to each word. Read
the sentence, pause and let pupils fill in the word.
Tell pupils that they are reading real sentences, and praise them. Make sure
pupils know the meaning of what they read.
