- Say the word big. Pupils repeat big.
- Take away the beginning /b/ sound and change it to /p/. Ask pupils: What
do you hear? (pig)
- Take away the final /g/ sound and change it to /t/. What do you hear? (pit)
- Take away the middle /i/ sound and change it to /o/. What do you hear?

Reading Readiness
- Write the it words, the ig words and the ot words in a table on the board: pit,
sit, pig, big, pot, hot.
- Practice reading the words.
- Say the word pit. Say /p/i/t/.
- Pupils repeat /p/i/t/.
- Say pit. Pupils repeat pit.
- Do the same with sit, /s/i/t/.
- Write ig on the board.
- Say /i/g (ig). Pupils repeat /i/g/.
- Write big on the board and practice /b/i/g/ (big)
- Say /o/t/ (ot). Pupils repeat /o/t/.
- Write pot on the board and practice /p/o/t/ (pot).
- Do the same with the words hot and not.
- Review the three groups of sounds: it, ig, ot.
- Practice all the word groups. Ask pupils: How many words on the board can
you read? Have pupils take turns reading. Count the words pupils can read
and compliment them.
