"Pat a Cake" (song #2.15)
- Remind pupils of the steps in making bread. Elicit the steps from them,
pointing to the pictures in the book, if necessary.
- Ask pupils if they have ever baked bread, cookies or cake. Tell them that
the next song is about making a cake.
- Sing the song using gestures and props.
- Distribute small chunks of dough to each pupil. Tell pupils to use a pencil
as a rolling pen.
- Do the following motions as you sing: pat the dough, roll the dough with
the rolling pin, put the dough in the pan.
- Pupils should imitate these actions while singing the song.
- Sing the song several times.

The Letter Z
- Remind pupils that there are two kinds of animals: farm animals and zoo
animals.
- Write the word farm on the board. Ask pupils: What letter does the word
farm begin with?
- Write the word zoo on the board. Ask pupils what letter the word begins
with. Elicit Z.
- Show pupils pictures of: zoo, zero, zebra. Say: Z, zebra, Z, zoo, Z, zero.
Repeat the words several times.
- Chant: The letter is Z, the sound is /z/.
- Ask a pupil to find Z on the ABC strip. Tell pupils Z is a special letter
because it is the last letter in the alphabet.

Writing
- Draw the house on the board and write the letters Zz in the house.
- Explain that the big Z and small z may look the same but the big Z goes up
to the roof and the small z stays in the house.
- Write the big Z and small z in the air with your finger.
- Now have pupils write the letter Z with a finger, in the air and on their desks.
