Phonemic Awareness
- Say the word bed. Pupils repeat bed.
- Change the final /d/ sound to a /n/ sound. What do you hear? (Ben)
- Say the word Ben. Pupils repeat Ben.
- Change the /b/ sound to a /h/ sound. What do you hear? (hen)
- Change the /h/ sound to a /t/ sound. What do you hear? (ten)

Reading Readiness
- Write at on the board.
- Have pupils read at.
- Review bat, mat, fat, hat.
- Now erase the words and write cat.
- Have pupils say /k/ /a/ /t/.
- Say the word cat with them.
- Repeat the procedure with the letter P (pat).
- Have pupils practice reading all the at words.
- Now show pupils the e flashcard. Say: /e/ elephant.
- Put the letter n after the e.
- Have pupils say en.
- Now put a p before the en and have pupils say /p/ /e/ /n/.
- Say pen. Pupils repeat the word: pen.
- Follow this procedure with the words: Ben, ten, hen.
- Draw the table below on the board and fill in with at words and en words.
