Tell pupils that they know many letters already. Point to the alphabet poster
and point to the letters they know, with pupils saying the letters as you
point to them.
- Put up on the board flashcards of pictures on one side and wordcards on
the other of: girl, sit, in, camel, seal, bear, cat, mat, bat, bag, leg, arm, hat,
fat, tall, small, ball.
- Go over the pictures on the board with the class. Focus pupils' attention on
the beginning sounds of the words.
- Go over the words on the wordcards. Emphasize the beginning and end
sounds. Ask a pupil to find the picture of the word and stick it next to the
word.
- Repeat the matching activity with all the words.
- Display on the board the flashcards for small, ball. Write the pattern "all"
and practice putting the letters: c, b, w, t, in front of the "all" pattern to make
words that the children know.
