Go to Sleep (game #2)
- Choose a few flashcards of previously learned letters and put them on the
board. Review the letters and sounds together with pupils. For every letter
on the board, chant: The letter is _____ , the sound is /_ /. Tell pupils
to "go to sleep." Take a letter card away. When pupils open their eyes, ask:
What is missing? Pupils must guess the missing letter and say a word that
starts with that letter.
- Repeat the activity and ask for volunteers to take away a letter or letters.

The Letter P
- Turn the pages in the book "From Head to Toe" and have pupils name the
animals. Ask: What letter does each animal's name begin with? When
you reach the page with the penguin, have a pupil come and point to the
letter p in penguin. Say penguin, emphasizing the beginning /p/ sound.
Have pupils repeat, speaking softly and then loudly.
- Chant with pupils: The letter is P, the sound is /p/.
- Hold up the book and tell pupils: Point to the penguin, point, point, point!
- Ask pupils what beginning sound they hear in point.
- Put up the flashcards Pp and elicit other words pupils know that begin with P:
pizza, pen, pencil, point, penguin, pupil, picture, purple, pink, porridge,
party, pots and pans.
- Put picture cards and wordcards under the letter P.
- Have pupils find the letter P on the ABC strip. Ask them to look at the small
letter and see what is special about it. If pupils say that it goes down to the
basement, ask them what other letter they have learned that also goes down
to the basement. Have pupils find the g and point to it.
●
Writing
- Draw the house and write the letters Pp in the house.
- Show pupils how the small p goes down to the basement.
- Now have pupils write the letter P with a finger, in the air and on their desks.
