The Letters I and A
Put flashcards of words with the vowels a and i on the board: sit, bag, big, fat,
cat, hat, bat, mat, pit. Write the letters a and i on top of two columns.
- Point to each picture, say the word together with the class and ask: What
sound do you hear at the beginning of the word? What letter makes
that sound? Write the letter under the picture.
- What sound do you hear at the end of the word? What letter makes
that sound? Write the letter under the picture.
- What sound do you hear in the middle of the word? Which letter
makes that sound? (point to the a and i on the board). After you elicit the
correct vowel, write it in the middle of the word and say the word slowly again
with the class pointing to each letter as you say it. Put the flashcard in the
appropriate column.
- After you have done the same with all the words and all the flashcards are
in the appropriate vowel columns, read the words in each column aloud
with the pupils.
