BINGO (VA #3)
▪
▪
▪
Have pupils draw a 3x3 grid in their notebooks (creating 9 squares) and write any review word
they choose in the squares.
Play BINGO by saying a word and have pupils mark if they have that word on their BINGO grid.
Record the words you say on the board.
Continue saying words until a pupil gets three in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and
calls: BINGO! Check the winning words against the list on the board.

Vocab Activity – Pre-Reading
•
Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): animal, beach, beautiful, boat, camp,
climb, drive, grandparents, grass, lunch, mountain, nature, north, picnic, south, together, trip.
•
Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.
•
Word Search (VA #20)
▪
▪
For each word, have pupils work with a partner or small group to scan the story on pages 50-55 in
their Course Books for the word. Have pupils write down where they found each word (page and
panel number). Tell pupils that they can use the pictures in the story as clues to help them.
More than one instance of some words is possible. Some words may appear in plural form.
Pre-Reading
•
Show the story The Family Trip. Before reading, have pupils look at the story and make predictions
about what will happen based on the pictures and title.
•
Discuss what a "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure" story is. Show pupils that there are two endings to the
story, and that they will be able to choose which one they will read.
Let's Read
•
Read the first part of the story The Family Trip (pages 50-51) together as a class. Ask the pupils
comprehension questions while reading:

Page 50, panel 1: Who is in the photograph? Have pupils point to and name the family members.
Who is speaking in the story? (Lily)
Page 50, panel 2: Where do the adults in the family want to go? (To the north.) What do they
want to do there? (They want to climb the mountains, swim in the river, see the animals in the
forest, camp, and have a picnic.)
Page 51, panel 3: Where do the children want to go? (To the south.) What do they want to do
there? (They want to play on the beach, read books, swim in the sea, and go on a boat.)
Page 51, panel 4: Where do you think the family should go? Have pupils vote for their
preference.
Based on the story ending pupils prefer, divide the class into two groups. Have one group read about
the trip to the mountains (pages 52/53). Have the other group read about the trip to the beach
(pages 54/55). When pupils are finished, bring the pupils back together and have each group explain
what happened in the story to the other group. Ask questions to prompt them:
