Before teaching the grammar form, say the following sentences: Rabbits can jump. Rabbits can't fly.

Ask pupils to share what they think is meant by can/can't in these sentences.
Tell pupils that they will learn how to use can/can't in English (Use L1 if needed).
Introduce can / can't . Explain that can is used to describe an action someone/something has the
ability to do and can't is used to describe an action someone/something doesn't have the ability to
do. Use L1 if needed.

Show pupils that can/can't is followed by a verb.
Teach the new vocabulary word "verb" (use L1 if needed). Explain that a verb describes an action
word. Elicit some examples of verbs pupils just learned or reviewed.

Extension: Expose more advanced pupils to the fact that can't is a short form of can + not. Explain
that some words in English can be combined to one.

Practice the form by asking the pupils: Can you jump? (Elicit: Yes, I can. / No, I can't.) Can you fly?
(Elicit: Yes, I can. / No, I can't.)
Vocab Activity

Pass the Ball (VA #6)

Toss a soft ball to a pupil and ask: Can you (ride a bicycle)? Have the pupil respond: I can ride a
bicycle. / I can't ride a bicycle. before passing the ball to another pupil and asking the question
again.
After a few pupils have been passed the ball, change the question: Can you ___ ?
Continue until each pupil has answered at least one question.
