Vocab Activity
•
Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): adult, age, aunt, daughter,
grandchildren, grandparents, husband, old, parents, son, uncle, wife, young.
•
Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.
•

Begin by putting two words on the board that will become the categories, e.g., old vs. young
Divide the class into two teams. Each team sends a pupil to the board to write one of the
vocabulary words under the category.
Teams receive points for each word placed under the correct category. You may choose to give
bonus points for correct spelling.
Once all (or most) of the words have been used, start two new categories (e.g., man vs. woman,
adult vs. child) and continue playing.
Vocabulary
Review
•
Review the vocabulary using the word cards: beach, camp, cloudy, cold, cool, flower, garden, hot,
outside, park, place, rainy, snowy, sunny, tree, warm, windy, world.
•
Ask pupils what these words have in common. Elicit: places and things outside, the weather, etc.
New
•
Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: air, dry, forest, grass, mountain, nature, river, sea.

Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on page 26.
Word Workout (homophones): Point out to pupils that they know another word that sounds like "sea"
but is written differently. Elicit: "see." Write both words on the board and practice their meanings.
Elicit from pupils other pairs of words they know that are homophones, e.g.: son/sun, eye/I, for/four,
wear/where.
Ready to Read with Words I Know – Phonics Review
•
Remind pupils that the vowel teams 'ou' and 'ow' make the same sound in English. The 'ou' sound
/ou/, as in the words: mountain, outside, and the 'ow' sound /ou/, as in the words: flower, cow.

Ask pupils which of these words is a new word they have just learned. Elicit: mountain
Elicit other words pupils know with this sound.
Class Discussion
•
Ask pupils the following questions. Encourage responses in English and emphasize the target
vocabulary in the pupils' answers. Reassure pupils that there is not one correct answer.
