Before teaching the grammar form, say the following sentences and demonstrate the motions:

You can jump. (Point to a volunteer pupil to do the motion.)
He can jump. (Ask a boy pupil to do the motion.)
She can jump. (Ask a girl pupil to do the motion.)
Ask pupils to identify which words in the sentences are not the same. (Elicit: the first word/the
pronoun)
Tell pupils that they will learn about pronouns in English (Use L1 if needed).

Introduce singular subject pronouns. Explain that pronouns can be used instead of people or things.

Explain to pupils that 'it' can be used instead of a thing or an animal. Give the examples of a ball
and a fish.

Writing Tip: Tell pupils that the pronoun 'I' always has a capital letter in English no matter where
in the sentence it appears.
Ask students to compare the subject pronouns to pronouns in their own language. How are they the
same or different?
