How old are you? (Elicit: I am ___ years old.)
Vocab Activity
•
Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): be quiet, close the door, listen,
look at, open your book, please, point to, pupil, show me, sit down, stand up, teacher, thank you.
•
Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity. Add gestures for as many
words or phrases as you can as you review them.
•
Tell pupils that they should listen for these instructions in English in the classroom. Use this time to
explain the classroom rules and expectations (use L1 if needed).
•
Mime Game (VA #1)
▪
▪
▪
Act out a word or phrase and have the pupils guess the word you are miming.
Have the pupil who guessed correctly come to the board to play the next round. Play several
rounds to practice the words.
The activity can be done as a whole class or as a team/small group competition.
Introducing Magical
Course Book pages 2-3
•
Show pupils the Course Book. Remind pupils that books in English open from left to right. Have pupils
practice opening and turning pages in their books correctly.
•
Briefly explain to pupils the structure of the Course Book (use L1 if needed). Have pupils open their
books to the table of contents on pages 2-3.
•
Show pupils that first they will work on Getting Ready, to remind them of what they learned last year.
Then, they will work on five different units: Me and My Green World, Health and Fitness, Art is
Everywhere, Going on Vacation, and Talk About Technology. Tell pupils that in each new unit they will
learn new words, read texts, and learn about how to speak and write English correctly (grammar).
•
Introduce the pupils to their course materials and discuss any labels that pupils can use to easily
locate information in their Course Book, e.g., what pages to work on in the Workbook, when they
must use their notebook, where to find the glossary, etc.
▪
▪
•
Have pupils write their names on their English notebooks and explain how they will use them.
Writing Tip: Remind pupils that names in English always begin with a capital letter.
Introduce pupils to the glossary, beginning on page 209 in the Course Book. Tell pupils that it includes
all the review and new words that they will learn this year.
▪
▪
▪
Ask pupils if they have used a dictionary before and if so, what for. Elicit some uses of a dictionary
from pupils9 experience. Tell pupils that they can use the glossary in the book to help them
remember the words, read texts, and check how to spell words in English.
Ask pupils to observe what letter the words start with in the beginning of the glossary on page
209. Ask pupils to observe what letter the words start with at the end of the glossary on page
224. Point out to pupils that the glossary lists words in alphabetic order in English.
Have pupils practice finding a few words they know in the glossary.
