APPENDIX I – Vocabulary Activities & More
1. Mime Game
• Act out a word or phrase and have the pupils guess the word you are miming.
• Have the pupil who guessed correctly come to the board to play the next round. Play several
rounds to practice the words.
• The activity can be done as a whole or as a team/small group competition.
2. Disappearing Card
• Show all the cards and have pupils say the words.
• Then, hide one card and have the pupils say the words again, including the one you have hidden.
• Continue until all the cards are hidden and the pupils say the words in order from memory.
3. BINGO
• Have pupils draw a 3x3 grid in their notebooks (creating 9 squares) and write any review words
they choose in the squares.
• Play BINGO by saying a word and have pupils mark if they have that word in their BINGO grid.
Record the words you say on the board.
• Continue saying words until a pupil gets three in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and
calls: BINGO! Check the winning words against the list on the board.
4. Word Association
• Say one of the vocabulary words and have pupils quickly respond with another word that they
associate with it.
• Accept any logical answer.
• Play a few rounds to practice different words.
5. The Minute Challenge
• Show words on the board. Give pupils one minute (timed) to memorize as many of the words as
they can (no writing).
• After one minute, hide the words and have pupils write down as many as they can remember.
• When they are finished, reveal the words one by one and have pupils check their lists. Have
pupils give themselves one point for each word they remembered, and a bonus point for each
word spelled correctly.
• The activity can be done individually or as a team/small group competition.
6. Pass the Ball
• Toss a soft ball or object to a pupil and ask a question. Have the pupil respond before passing
the ball to another pupil and asking the question again.
• After a few pupils have been passed the ball, change the question.
• Continue until each pupil has answered at least one question.
7. Stand Up! Sit Down!
• Say: Stand up if your birthday is in January! Continue with the next, February, and then the next
month, until all the pupils are standing.
• Say: Sit down if your birthday is in&! Say all the months until all the pupils are sitting.
• Say the months in random order to make the activity more challenging.
8. I Spy
• Say: I spy with my little eye something&
• Have pupils identify the correct word. For each incorrect guess, add another clue.
• Play a few rounds to practice different words. The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead.
