Vocab Activity

Do the activity to review the vocabulary (show the word cards): air, animal, better, bicycle, bird,
bottle, clean, climb, collect, dry, forest, glass, grass, horse, leave, mountain, mouse, nature,
newspaper, picnic, plant, plastic, rabbit, ride, river, save, sea, sheep, together, use.

Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.

Ask pupils what some of these words have in common. Elicit: nature, animals, etc.
Guess What (VA #16)

Choose a word from the reviewed words (for example, "bird"). Don't tell the pupil the word you
chose. Give a clue about the word using vocabulary the pupils know, e.g., They can fly.
Have pupils identify the correct word. For each incorrect guess, add another clue, e.g., They sing
in the morning. (Elicit: It is a bird.)
Play a few rounds to practice different words. The teacher may choose a volunteer to lead.

Teach the new vocabulary using the word cards: ground, grow, keep, less, light, problem,
turn off/on.

Ask pupils: What are some things you can turn off/on? (Elicit: lights, computers, phones, etc.)
Ask pupils: What are some things that grow? (Elicit: flowers, vegetables, trees, etc.)
Have pupils point to and read each new word in their Course Books on page 184.

Remind pupils that the vowel team 8ow9 can make the sound /ow/ as in the words: cow, flower. Tell
pupils that the vowel team 'ow' can also make the long /O/ sound in English, as in the words: grow,
follow, show.

grow, Internet, keep, keyboard, less, light, money, problem, screen, technology, toy, turn off/on, use.

The Minute Challenge (VA #5)

Show the words on the board. Give pupils one minute (timed) to memorize as many of the words
as they can (no writing).
After one minute, hide the words and have pupils write down as many as they can remember.
When they are finished, reveal the words one by one and have pupils check their lists. Have
pupils give themselves one point for each word they remembered, and a bonus point for each
word spelled correctly.
The activity can be done individually or as a team/small group competition.
