Out of the Box

Have pupils follow the instructions to complete the Out of the Box project.

Have pupils use the dialogue on page 153 of the Couse Book to practice asking for and giving
directions to nearby places. Have pupils follow the structure of the dialogues to write directions to
places near the classroom (e.g., the school gates, the animal corner, or the art room), or (if possible),
places nearby in town (e.g., a bus stop, the store, a pupil9s house, or the park). Have pupils work in
groups to test out the instructions by walking to the places.

Have pupils video record their dialogues, having one partner ask for directions and the other giving
the directions. Have pupils record themselves walking to the destinations to show that the
instructions are accurate.
•
Show or share some of the videos with the rest of the class.

on their own or with a partner/small group.

Before teaching the grammar form, ask pupils to look at the sentences in the Course Book.

Ask pupils to identify the subjects and verbs in the questions.
Remind pupils that sentences usually begin with a subject. Ask pupils to identify what these
sentences begin with (Elicit: To be (Am/Is/Are). Ask pupils what they think this means.
Tell pupils that in English we begin a question with To be (Am/Is/Are) (Use L1 if needed).
Introduce the Present Progressive (questions).

Review the Present Progressive positive form by pointing to the picture and saying: She is calling
a taxi. Then, ask: Is she calling a taxi?
Explain that in order to make a question, the to be verb (am, is, are) is said in the beginning of the
sentence. The subject then follows, and then the main verb+ing. Use L1 if needed.
Show how this is different from a positive Present Progressive sentence by giving the examples:
You are calling a taxi.
Are you calling a taxi?
