Review the vocabulary using the word cards before doing the activity.

The Longest Sentence (VA #19)

Have pupils work in small groups/pairs to write a sentence that uses as many new or review
words as they can (logically). Give an example to demonstrate: The plane is leaving from the gate
at the airport.
When they are finished, have groups/pairs share their sentence with the class. The group with
the sentence that uses the most reviewed/new words wins.

Before reading, have pupils talk to a partner about if you have traveled in a train, a boat, or an
airplane before. What do you remember about your first ride?

Have pupils use the sentence starters: I traveled by train/boat/airplane. I remember& / I

Before reading, ask pupils about the text type. Elicit that it is a comic.

Have pupils look at the text and make predictions about the story based on the pictures. Point
out to pupils that the story does not have a title.

Read the first page of the comic together with the pupils.

After reading, ask the pupils what Kate is worried about in the story. (Elicit: She is worried because
she is about to fly in an airplane for the first time. / She is worried about missing the flight. / She is
worried about not having her ticket.)

Read the second page (page 151) of the comic together with the pupils.

Teach the new vocabulary word "out" through the context of the text (use L1 if needed to explain
the meaning).
After reading, ask the pupils how Kate feels at the end of the story. Elicit that she likes flying.
